A public meeting is taking place in Taunton to discuss what the Government’s latest planning reforms mean for housing in the area.

Entitled ‘Why So Many Houses?’, it is being hosted by Taunton and Wellington Liberal Democrats as a free event at CICCIC in Paul Street on Friday, 17 July at 7pm.

A spokesperson said: “This meeting is to provide residents with the opportunity to raise the questions which most concern them about the recent changes and on how decisions are made on housing and planning in Taunton and Wellington.”

A panel of four experts will include Taunton and Wellington’s MP, Gideon Amos, who is the Liberal Democrat spokesperson on housing and communities.

He said: “There is no shying away from the fact that local communities are facing planning system which is increasingly developer-led as the Government seeks to hit its 1.5 million homes target.

“This meeting is a chance to unpack what the changes mean for the future of our area.”

Gideon will be joined on the panel by:

  • Selina White, CEO of Magna Housing.
  • Cllr Mike Rigby, Somerset Council’s Executive Member for Economic Development, Planning and Assets.
  • Stephen Lodge, CEO of Westward Housing.

The panel will be chaired by Cllr Federica Smith-Roberts, Somerset Council’s Lead Member for Communities, Environment and Climate Change.

There will also be a short presentation by Phil Stone, Chair of Taunton and Wellington Lib Dems’ Campaign Team.
