A government minister has assured Wellington’s MP, Gideon Amos, that “active efforts” are being made to restore Post Office services in the town.

Wellington has been without the facility since 2019 when the One Stop convenience store in High Street, which housed it, closed. The nearest post office is now at Rockwell Green.

Gideon led a debate in Parliament on the future of the postal service and also launched a Wellington Post Office petition which was signed by more than 300 people.

He said on Monday that he was “delighted” with the positive news which came in a letter from Kate Dearden, Minister of State for the Future of Work.

She told him: “I recognise the importance of access to Post Office services to local communities and the impact of their absence in Wellington.

“I have raised this case with Post Office Ltd and understand that the opportunity to open a new branch has been advertised and an expression of interest received.

“I welcome the efforts being made to explore opportunities to restore a Post Office presence in the town.

“Decisions relating to the location and operation of individual Post Office branches are operational matters for Post Office Ltd. “The Government, however, remains committed to maintaining a sustainable and accessible Post Office network across the United Kingdom.”

The Minister added: “I hope you are reassured that active efforts are being made to restore Post Office services in Wellington.

“Thank you again for writing and for your advocacy on behalf of residents and businesses in the town.”

Gideon said: “I want to thank everyone in Wellington who supported this campaign and helped me get it on to the government’s agenda in Westminster.

“My first meeting with the Postal Affairs Minister was back in 2024, soon after being elected.

“As I told the House of Commons, it is nonsensical that a town the size of Wellington should be without its own Post Office.

“I am delighted that the continuing pressure has now yielded this positive result from the new minister.

“I will continue to work to ensure a successful outcome and that a new post office for Wellington is finally realised.”
