Gideon Amos, MP for Taunton and Wellington, is holding a public event to discuss proposed SEND (special educational needs and disability) reforms.

The Coffee Morning takes place at The Den in Paul Street, Taunton, on Saturday, May 30 (11am to 12.30pm).

Gideon has been campaigning for a better deal for SEND families across Somerset and has previously shared concerns about the Government’s proposals during the consultation which closed today.

He said: “I want this to be an open forum on the Government’s White Paper on SEND reforms.

“I know that many constituents have responded to the public consultation and this event is an opportunity to discuss the proposals so I can raise specific concerns in Parliament.

“As your MP, it is my job to represent constituents and I would like to encourage SEND parents, carers and professionals to read the proposals, and share anything they would like me to raise directly with the Government.”

Some of the key proposals are:

  • EHCPs (education health and care plan) limited only to ‘most complex needs’ and reassessed when moving up school stages
  • Removal of tribunal power to direct school placements
  • Investment into mainstream schools to increase SEND provision.

The Den Coffee House, next to Taunton Library, was launched by Claire Naylor and has now established itself as an inclusive hub where SEND parents and carers can access free advice and resources, alongside a comfortable environment which includes a sensory space.
