Gideon Amos calls for Musgrove funding

Taunton’s MP, Gideon Amos, has stepped up his campaign for interim funding to support the maternity and paediatric unit at Musgrove Park Hospital.

The Health Secretary announced in January that construction on a new unit at the hospital will not start until “2030 to 2035”.

Mr Amos contacted the Health Minister, Wes Streeting, after it was announced the Yeovil Maternity Unit and Special Care Baby Unit is being closed from yesterday (Monday) – with Musgrove becoming the closest available option.

Mr Amos said he was “very concerned” about the move and was working with his Lib Dem colleague Adam Dance, MP for Yeovil, to get the units reopened.

“Musgrove Park is under a huge amount of pressure and maternity services in particular are at breaking point.

“We need the investment that's been promised for 2033 now - even more urgently since the Yeovil announcement – and I've already spoken to the Health Minister.”

He added that concerns about the NHS were the reason he was putting on a public meeting in Taunton later this month.

“It's really important we get people's views to help get the NHS improvements we all need and deserve.”

The meeting takes place on Friday, May 30th, at the Creative Innovation Centre (CIC) in Taunton’s Paul Street.
