Taunton and Wellington MP, Gideon Amos, has held talks with Network Rail on improvements at a crossing where a local teenager tragically lost his life.

Harry Basham, 17, died at the ‘5/13’ pedestrian crossing, located about a mile east of Taunton Station, on 24 October, 2025.

A petition has now been launched for either safety improvements or the complete closure of the crossing. It has so far been signed by more than 3,600 people.

They are being supported by Gideon, who said: “My meeting with Network Rail was very constructive. Useful data provided tells us that this crossing is crossed on foot about 35 times on an average day, which Network Rail do not consider heavy usage.

“However, local pedestrians are important to me and I asked whether there could be a red light to warn pedestrians of oncoming trains but, due to the sets of points nearby, that technology would not work here.

“I’ve asked them to look at convenient alternative ways to cross the railway on foot and, most importantly, for consultation before any decision is taken for this crossing to be closed or kept open.

“I’m keen to keep focused on how we can make this crossing safer for all concerned.”
