Barnaby Webber’s parents meet Ed Davey and Gideon Amos

Taunton couple David and Emma Webber, whose son Barnaby died in the Nottingham attacks, have met the Liberal Democrat leader, Sir Ed Davey, and their local MP, Gideon Amos.

It was announced last week that the NHS trust which treated triple killer Valdo Calocane in the years before the attacks is being investigated by police for corporate manslaughter.

Calocane, who has paranoid schizophrenia, was sentenced to an indefinite hospital order after he fatally stabbed 19-year-old Barnaby, fellow student Grace O’Malley Kumar, also 19, and 65-year-old caretaker Ian Coates in June 2023.

A public inquiry into the attacks, which lasted more than three months and heard from 164 witnesses, finished in June.

The chairman, Her Honour Deborah Taylor, is expected to report back with her findings and recommendations next year.

Emma said the families’ fight and cause was cross-party with no political agenda.

The couple are now meeting with each party and its leader “to ensure they are fully aware of the facts and what needs to happen.”

Emma added: "We were glad to be invited by Gideon to meet with himself and Ed.  

“It's so important to us that the tragedy we have faced, the failures that allowed it to happen and changes that are needed are all discussed at the very highest of levels.

“We appreciate having the support of our own MP in what has been and continues to be a really difficult time for our family.”

Gideon added: “The statutory public inquiry that Emma and David so courageously fought for has revealed how badly they have been failed by multiple government agencies.

“The people responsible now need to be held accountable and I'll continue doing whatever I can to continue working cross party to make sure happens and that Barnaby is always remembered.”
